Toshiba D-TR1 bin & skin for Slingbox

I use Slingbox PRO-HD to watch TV from Japan.  The Toshiba D-TR1 digital terrestrial+satellite TV tuner is connected to it and provides a constant 2Mbps+ clean HDTV feed over the Pacific.  The nice thing about this tuner is that it can record video to an external USB hard drive.  This feature is particularly useful for those who watch Japanese TV from a different time zone.

Unfortunately, Sling Media doesn't support this tuner.  So I created a .bin file and skin, and uploaded them as a package to the JP1 forum.

The remote data package is available at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=9158 .  (It has been there for a couple of months, but I updated it with the shortcuts today)

  1. I use the same tuner to watch my Slingbox in Japan from the U.S. I currently use the D-terminal to connect to the component in on the Pro-HD. This is an analog signal that is suppose to be going away soon. My understanding is that after a certain date, the analog output from the D-TR1 will be shut-off. I don't know how they will do this. Any insights as to whether this box is affected?

BTW, I use the Slingmedia provided remote which has a bunch of extra buttons. Did you ever make a smaller version of yours? I like yours better because it looks more like the original remote, and is simpler. Thanks!

  2. I think you misinterpreted the move to eliminate D terminals from video devices in Japan. The new regulation prohibits analog HD output from BD players and TV tuners manufactured on or after Jan 1, 2011. Therefore, your D-TR1 will not be affected by this.

I haven't made any smaller version of the remote skin and have no plan to do so. These days, I control the tuner using the keyboard shortcuts so the skin is not important to me anymore. All of the buttons except the power button are mapped to keyboard keys.

  3. I'm afraid they could send a firmware update that disables the operation of D3 on the D-TR1 post-manufacturing. I did notice that the HDFuryIII is readily available in Japan on amazon.

Do you have any good websites you can recommend that help explain these rules going forward? I'm not in Japan so I don't have anyone I can ask. Japanese sites are ok. Thanks!

  4. http://www.aacsla.com/license/AACS_Adopter_Agrmt_090605.pdf

2.2.2.1 Analog Sunset – 2010. With the exception of Existing Models, any Licensed Player manufactured after December 31, 2010 shall limit analog video outputs for Decrypted AACS Content to SD Interlace Modes only.

    D-TR1 was an existing model

  6. Thank you very much for this skin/PL file; This is an awesome tuner but for some reason, I can't get any HDD to work with it. It is a big language issue but I will continue to try to figure it out. Great work; thank you again.

  8. That's a known problem with D-TR1. Its USB power is so weak that some hard drives fail to spin up at start up. You can either get a harddrive with an external power supply or a hard drive known to work with D-TR1. I went with the former solution.
